Cut Off

The solitary confinement cell is cold—really fucking cold. I have been dirty for three days now if I am correct by oatmeal and soup drop-offs. Heidi refuses to see me, so Red comes. He chunks the tray on the floor and leaves without saying a word.

I cannot stand him. Or her.

They are mad I killed our mother.

I am mad they stole my life.

Neither has an excuse, but Heidi had numerous opportunities to save us and each time she chose to walk away and further propagate the pain. She is no better than Martin or Peggy. Red is only marginally better because we are matched in age, but even still I know he could have elected to march to a different beat. He could have saved us, too.

He chose not to.

The split I feel between my siblings is a thousand times worse than the break up with Stone ever was. I am caught, unable to deny they are my blood, but decrying their crimes at the same time. I am fraught with every possible emotion as I try to align with the monotony of it all and come to a place of acceptance.

In short, I’m fucking stuck.

And I can do nothing about it.

So, I sing my favorite hairband songs and think of Joe. I let my mind escape even though my body cannot. They can take my flesh, but they cannot restrain my thoughts from meandering. I understand better than anyone I have been brainwashed in the programming, but a small piece of me still breathes pure Natalie.

I think Joe knows. He sees that little spark in me. Breathing gently on it, he can turn my smoke into a giant fiery storm. This is what he does to me. And I never expected his love to radiate through me like this, bringing me closer to my soul—closer to me—but he does.

He watches over my dancing flames as we trip and tumble across our map. I cannot imagine this life without him. Without Joe, my fire will die down, turn to cinders, and dust.

A gust of wind will blow me far away from the mountain we tried so hard to climb, and I will not be resurrected as I suffer through my apathetic days under their reign.

I could eliminate the possibility and kill myself. Take the sheet off the mattress and make a noose and pray for a quick departure.

Make a choice.

Choose wisely, Natalie.

My thoughts deter as the door busts open. With a scowling look, Red barks off, “Come on, you need to get cleaned up. We have clients coming from overseas in a few days.”

I want to ask about Joe, but I can’t think as I try to pay attention to the twists and turns we take through the warehouse. We ride a rickety elevator down to the depths as my lip quivers with thoughts of never making it out of this hell alive.

“Strip,” he commands, unwavering. I innocently blink up at him. “Don’t give me that look. Take your fucking clothes off and get in the shower.
